Early morning apartment fire near Pioneer Square

SEATTLE – At 2:45 a.m. on Nov. 3, the Seattle Fire Department’s Fire Alarm Center received notice of an automatic fire alarm in a residential building in the 100 block of 2nd Ave. S. Dispatchers received calls from the building’s staff reporting a fire in an apartment unit in the structure. The incident was upgraded to a full response. Ladder 1 arrived first on scene and confirmed a fire in a unit on the seventh floor of the low-rise apartment building.

Smoke was visible from the window of the fire unit.  Building occupants safely evacuated the structure through the stairwells. Firefighters established a water supply and made entry into the unit. The building’s sprinkler system activated and helped keep the fire contained and under control. Firefighters extinguished the remaining hot spots and confirmed there was no extension of the fire into surrounding units.

At the height of the incident, five engines, three ladder trucks, three battalion chiefs, a deputy chief, a medical services officer, a safety chief, an aid unit, a medic unit and additional support staff responded.

Once the fire was out, crews transitioned to cleaning up water that had accumulated in several units from the sprinkler system. Incident command reported that the occupants in the fire unit and the unit below were displaced, but assistance from the American Red Cross was not needed that at that time. No injuries were reported.

Fire investigators ruled the cause as undetermined. The findings were shared with the Seattle Police Department’s Arson and Bomb Squad unit per protocol for undetermined fires.
